Reel versus Real code
I just came across this article which lists ten differences between code (if you're wondering which "code" I'm referring to, then you missed something elementary, my dear Watson) as shown in movies and code written in real life by us. Makes for a hearty laugh..
My favorites -
Code cannot be cracked by an 8 year old kid in a matter of seconds
Sorry, no. Just no.
Most code is not inherently cross platform
Remember in Independence Day when whatshisface-math-guy writes a virus that works on both his apple laptop AND an alien mothership? Bullshit! If real life were like film I'd be able to port wordpress to my toaster using a cat5 cable and a bag of glitter.
(I had to give it to these folks - I have watched Independence Day atleast 6 times now, and the first time I saw this scene, I was completely blown away by the compatibility between the alien spacecraft and Jeff Goldblum's laptop! Little did I know then...)

After watching the movie, I was asking my friend if the aliens also ran on x86 architecture ... otherwise how would he know to write a computer program for it! :-))
Not necessarily. Ever heard of 'write once , run anywhere'? ;-)
@sriram: Now, that will give a concrete reason why those aliens were covered with what looked like uncollected garbage:D
came to ur blog thru a friend..Nice to see Indian gals talk about gadgets[havent found a single gal in my office who knows what a PSP or SATA disk is:( ]
by the way that virus thing can be possible since NASA had old alien space ship and could have cracked what kind of processor runs on it(hope the mother ship had not upgraded by this time ;))
and its not necessary that virus should be developed only on machines they are supposed to run right??does virtual simulations ring a bell??
well even 'write once , run anywhere'? ;-)
which is used for JAVA or C # need virtual machine built for such paltfrom...
suggestion of Ambivertsdiary seems good .. if u know somewhat abt there logic .. U can bult a code with genetic Algorithm where the enviromental variables can be adaptable .... quite Hypocritical ..coz never tried a code with enviromental variables as adaptable
ya thanks for feynmann article ...
Enjoy whenever.. I read it
